  • A long time ago, a rich merchant heard about this vrat and decided to do it after his daughter’s marriage. But somehow, he kept postponing it. After some time, he went on a business trip, there he faced many problems, and his boat was wrecked. Then after he remembered his oath for the Satyanarayan Katha. He realized his mistake and sincerely worshipped Lord Satyanarayan, everything was restored then.

Satyanarayan katha starts with Cleaning the pooja space with some (Holy water) Gangajal, after this start performing Ganesh Poojan to remove the obstacles, and then proceeding to the main rituals, which includes Kalash sthapana, while the procedure of kalash sthapana the priest(pujari) continuously chants kalash  sthapana mantras  Kalash Sthapana Mantra –

ॐ माधवाय नमः।
ॐ गोविन्दाय नमः।

गङ्गे च यमुने चैव गोदावरि सरस्वति।
नर्मदे सिन्धु कावेरि जलस्मिन् संनिधिं कुरु॥

ॐ वरुणाय नमः।
ॐ पृथिव्यै नमः।
ॐ गन्धर्वाय नमः।
ॐ सोमाय नमः।
ॐ ब्रह्मणे नमः॥

Meaning: The first line of this mantra has told us about Lord Vishnu (Keshav, Madhav, Govinda). The middle two lines of this mantra is about Hindu Sacred Rivers (Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Saraswati, Narmada, Sindhu and Kaveri). As we invite Hindu Sacred Rivers to be present in the kalash. 
The last line is about Varuna Dev (Water God) , Mother earth, Moon, and Brahma, requesting them to bless the kalash with divine presence. 
When to chant: while filling the kalash with Gangajal water chant river inviting verse. Finally bow down and mentally request all the Gods to stay in kalash during Satyanarayan pooja.

The Satyanarayan katha could be performed on any day. But there are some special Muhurta / Tithis  which are considered as good days for this pooja / katha. Satyanarayan pooja / katha is mostly performed on Poornima (full moon) day of every month, as it is dedicated to lord Vishnu (Satyanarayan).
